Crypto and Modern Finance — The shared ledger technology behind cryptocurrencies.
A blockchain is a shared digital ledger copied across many computers. Transactions are grouped into blocks and linked in a chain.
Decentralized: No single party controls the ledger. It is maintained by a network of participants instead of one authority.
Because each block links to the one before and copies exist across the network, changing past records is extremely hard. That makes confirmed entries effectively immutable.
Smart contract: Self executing code on a blockchain that runs automatically when its conditions are met, without a middleman.
Blockchain is the underlying technology. Cryptocurrency is one use of it, not the same thing.
